Prague is known for its castles, gothic towers, and romantic old streets. But one of the most magical experiences you can have while visiting the city actually happens outside of it.
Bohemian Switzerland National Park is one of the most popular day trips from Prague, located about two hours north of the city near the Czech–German border. Known for its dramatic sandstone formations, forest hiking trails, and the famous Tisá Rocks rock labyrinth featured in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the park offers travelers a chance to experience breathtaking nature outside the city. Many visitors explore the area on a guided small-group tour that includes transportation, scenic hikes, and lunch at a traditional Czech restaurant.
Why Bohemian Switzerland Is One of the Best Day Trips from Prague
Many visitors never realize that some of Central Europe’s most dramatic landscapes are within easy reach of Prague.
The sandstone formations in Bohemian Switzerland National Park were shaped over millions of years, creating towering rock pillars, narrow passageways, and sweeping cliffside viewpoints. The scenery feels almost surreal compared to the historic architecture of Prague.
Highlights of the region often include:
- Panoramic cliff views
- Dramatic sandstone formations
- Forest hiking trails
- Charming countryside villages
For travelers who enjoy photography, hiking, or discovering landscapes beyond the city, this region offers something completely different from Prague’s historic sites. Plus, it’s totally different depending on the season of year.
The Narnia-Like Rock Labyrinth at Tisá Rocks
One of the most unforgettable stops in the park is Tisá Rocks, a maze of towering sandstone formations that create winding corridors and hidden viewpoints.
These formations rise 30–40 meters high, creating narrow paths that twist between rock walls like a natural labyrinth.
The scenery is so striking that the area was used as a filming location for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Walking through the rocks genuinely feels like stepping into a fantasy world. It’s quiet, dramatic, and unlike anywhere else in the Czech Republic.
My Winter Lantern Hike Through the Rocks

I visited during winter and experienced a lantern hike through the rocks, which made the day even more magical.
As the sun began to fade, our guide handed out lanterns and we continued walking through the snowy rock corridors. The soft glow of the lanterns reflecting off the sandstone and snow created the most incredible atmosphere.
I wore a white cape that day to stay warm, and the guides joked that I looked like I had stepped out of Game of Thrones.
Honestly, it really did feel like being inside a fantasy series.
The combination of:
- glowing lanterns
- towering rock formations
- snow-covered forest paths
- complete quiet in nature
made it one of the most memorable travel experiences I had in the Czech Republic, or really… ever.

Travel Tip: Visit in Winter for a Magical Experience
Bohemian Switzerland is beautiful year-round, but visiting in winter adds a completely different atmosphere.
Snow transforms the rock formations and forests into something that truly feels like a fantasy landscape. And if your tour includes the lantern hike through the rocks, the experience becomes even more unforgettable.
For me, it was one of those rare travel days that felt almost cinematic.
