Europe Packing Guide: My Checked Bag Essentials for Stress-Free Travel

By Megan

I’m not a carry-on-only traveler.

I almost always check a bag, and that choice works well for the way I travel.

Europe trips often involve multiple cities, train stations, boutique hotels, and plenty of walking, so the goal isn’t necessarily packing as little as possible. It’s packing intentionally.

Your suitcase quietly sets the tone for your trip.

I look for something lightweight, durable, and easy to maneuver – especially when navigating cobblestones, train platforms, or narrow hotel corridors. Smooth wheels matter. A sturdy structure matters. And if I’m moving between destinations, I want luggage that feels helpful rather than cumbersome.

A quality checked spinner suitcase paired with a practical personal item is usually my preferred setup for Europe, though this carry-on set is on my wishlist!

Packing Cubes That Keep Everything Sane

Multiple stops are part of the charm of Europe, and also exactly why packing cubes become essential.

I organize mine into simple categories:

  • Tops
  • Bottoms
  • Sleepwear or underlayers
  • “Grab first” essentials

Instead of rummaging through your suitcase every evening, everything stays organized and easy to find – especially if in smaller hotel rooms where space is limited. I tested the theory of packing each outfit into its own large ziplock bag on my last trip, but it didn’t work as well for me as my usual packing cube method. Shop these super cute toile packing cubes here.

The Clothing Formula I Actually Use

I’m not someone who builds elaborate travel wardrobes (most of the time).

Instead, I rely on a simple formula that works across most European destinations and keeps packing stress low.

Typically, that looks like:

  • 2-3 neutral bottoms (leggings, trousers, or skirts)
  • Cute tops that layer easily
  • One daytime dress
  • One lightweight sweater or cardigan (which I usually wear while flying)
  • One structured jacket or blazer
  • 1-2 elevated outfit for evenings or special dinners
  • Comfortable walking shoes that can handle long days, usually these boots.
  • Running shoes so I have to flexibility to work out.

The goal is versatility without feeling repetitive. And because Europe is often experienced on foot, comfort always matters more than overpacking.

The Personal Item That Saves Every Travel Day

Even though I check luggage, my personal item is where the real travel essentials live.

This is the bag I keep close and rely on throughout transit.

Mine usually includes:

  • Passport and travel documents
  • Phone and watch charger and portable battery pack (this is required to be with you in the cabin, can’t be in your checked bag due to new rules)
  • Travel wallet
  • Lip balm and skincare basics
  • Eye drops
  • A light scarf or extra layer
  • Snacks for airport delays or long train days
  • My makeup, in case my bag gets lots (lol)
  • All of my medicine/vitamins
  • A book
  • Noise cancelling ear buds
  • Lysol wipes
  • A large plastic trash bag or shopping bag (disposable is key) to put THIS bag in when placing it under the seat in front of me…

This is also where I keep anything I’d never want separated from during travel. Checked luggage holds clothing. My personal item holds peace of mind.

Travel Tech I Never Skip

Europe travel moves quickly, and a few simple tech essentials make everything feel smoother.

I never leave home without:

  • A portable charger
  • My adapter
  • International data or eSIM setup
  • AirTags when checking luggage

These aren’t flashy purchases, but they remove friction – and that makes a huge difference when navigating airports, trains, or unfamiliar cities.

Toiletries: Keep It Light and Practical

I’ve learned not to overpack toiletries.

I stick to:

  • Travel-size skincare basics
  • SPF
  • Makeup
  • Toothbrush essentials & mouthwash
  • Minimal hair tools if truly necessary

Most European hotels provide hair dryers, and many everyday items are easy to replace abroad if needed. Packing lighter here creates room for the things that matter more. Toiletries are heavy!

The Small Extras I Always Add Last

Right before I zip my suitcase, I usually add a few final items that make travel feel more comfortable and personal:

  • A reusable water bottle
  • Foldable tote bag for shopping or day trips
  • Small journal or book
  • Sleep mask or earplugs

These aren’t dramatic essentials, but they often become the things I’m happiest I packed. Packing for Europe isn’t about restriction or following rigid rules.

Thoughtful packing means:

  • Easier train transfers
  • Less time managing luggage
  • More flexibility between destinations
  • Less stress during travel days

And ultimately, it keeps your attention where it belongs – on the experience itself, not hauling your heavy suitcase(s) around.
