In May 2024, I embarked on an unforgettable Alaskan cruise that began with a luxurious stay at the Fairmont Waterfront in Vancouver. This prime location across the street from the cruise port set the stage for an extraordinary journey to breathtaking destinations, including Ketchikan, Juneau, Glacier Bay, and College Fjord.

The Perfect Pre-Cruise Stay at Fairmont Waterfront
Starting our adventure at the Fairmont Waterfront was the best decision we could have made. This hotel not only offers stunning views of the waterfront but also provides unmatched convenience for cruise travelers. The Fairmont Waterfront’s pre-cruise package includes luggage pickup directly from your room, allowing us to relax and enjoy our stay without the hassle of dragging bags around. The seamless transition from land to sea made our trip kick off smoothly.
Smooth Sailing: Embarkation and Departure
Checking in for our cruise on the Grand Princess was a breeze. Thanks to the Princess Cruises app, we completed our check-in early and received our medallions in advance, allowing us to sail through the embarkation process with ease. With the pre-cruise hotel package, we were free to focus on enjoying our time at the Fairmont Waterfront, knowing our luggage would be handled expertly.
Post-cruise, our debarkation was just as effortless. We simply put our luggage out the night before, and it was conveniently waiting for us at the airport. We also booked a post-cruise airport transfer excursion, which included a scenic Portage Glacier cruise and a delightful lunch break before our departure at Anchorage airport. It was a perfect conclusion to our incredible journey.
Port Stops: Discovering Alaska’s Beauty

Our first port of call was the charming town of Ketchikan, known for its vibrant culture and scenic beauty. We explored local shops, marveled at the totem poles at Totem Bight State Park, and enjoyed the entertaining Lumberjack Show.
In Juneau, I opted for a solo hike, challenging myself with a steep climb of about 3,000 feet in elevation over three miles. The stunning trails offered breathtaking views and a serene escape into nature. While I had an exhilarating (and slightly nerve-wracking) encounter with two bears, I look forward to booking a whale-watching excursion next time to experience Juneau’s renowned marine life.
Due to high winds, we docked at Haines instead of Skagway. While disappointed to miss the White Pass Scenic Rail and Yukon Explorer excursion, Haines presented its own charm with quaint shops and even a unique hammer museum.
The highlight of our cruise was Glacier Bay, where the awe-inspiring glacial landscapes felt reminiscent of Antarctica. The mesmerizing views from the ship were unforgettable, and we appreciated the blankets available at towel stations to help combat the chilly winds.
Our sunny day at College Fjord was another memorable experience, with stunning ice floats and picturesque scenery. Watching from our balcony provided an intimate view that felt like a postcard come to life.
The final leg of our journey brought us to Anchorage and Seward. We booked an airport transfer excursion that included a scenic cruise to Portage Glacier and a visit to an animal conservation center. As it was the first sailing of the season on Portage Lake, we had the incredible experience of carving a path through the ice—truly the highlight of my trip!

Dining Onboard: What to Expect
While the food on the Grand Princess was decent, it didn’t stand out as exceptional. For those with dietary restrictions, it’s crucial to advocate for your needs. I recommend requesting fresh food from the back at the buffet or opting for the main dining room, where the staff is more adept at managing special dietary requests. Unfortunately, I experienced several bouts of illness due to gluten, which is disappointing, since I usually manage pretty well when traveling.
Making and changing dinner reservations through the app was straightforward, offering choices between private or shared dining options. No reservations were required for the main dining rooms at breakfast or lunch, and afternoon tea featured delightful gluten-free scones, a lovely touch to our dining experience.
Highlights of the Voyage
Among the unforgettable highlights was our excursion to Portage Glacier, where we had the unique chance to carve a path through the ice during the first sailing of the season. While whale sightings throughout the trip were rare, binoculars proved invaluable for spotting these majestic creatures and even mountain goats on Mt. Juneau.

- Explore North to Alaska Programming: Available in your stateroom, this informative programming is a great option if you prefer not to attend sessions in the Princess Theater.
- Stay Aware of Airport Transfers: Look for a representative holding a small Princess sign after customs to collect your taxi voucher.
- Be Prepared for Seasickness: The Pacific can be rough, so bring nausea patches just in case.
