Where to Stay in Lake Como: Best Areas + Hotels for First-Time Visitors
Few destinations capture the romance of Italy quite like Lake Como.
Framed by dramatic mountains, elegant villas, colorful lakeside towns, and sparkling blue water, it’s easy to see why Lake Como has become one of Italy’s most sought-after destinations. But choosing where to stay can be surprisingly overwhelming.
Unlike many cities, Lake Como isn’t one destination – it’s a collection of charming towns, each offering a completely different experience.
Whether you’re dreaming of luxury hotels, peaceful lakeside villages, or convenient ferry access, here’s where I recommend staying on your first visit.
Bellagio: Best for First-Time Visitors

If you’re only visiting Lake Como once, Bellagio is hard to beat.
Known as the “Pearl of Lake Como,” Bellagio sits where the lake splits into its famous Y-shape, making it one of the easiest places to explore the rest of the lake by ferry.
The town itself is wonderfully walkable, with flower-filled staircases, boutique shops, waterfront cafés, and beautiful lake views around nearly every corner.
It’s lively without feeling overwhelming and offers an excellent mix of sightseeing, shopping, and dining.
My Hotel Picks
One of Lake Como’s most iconic luxury hotels, offering historic elegance, impeccable service, beautiful gardens, and one of the best lakefront locations on the entire lake.
Perfect for:
- Luxury travelers
- Honeymooners
- Special celebrations
Family-owned with spectacular lake views, spacious rooms, a beautiful infinity pool, and a quieter atmosphere just above the center of town.
Perfect for:
- Couples
- Relaxing stays
- Boutique luxury
Varenna: Best for a Quiet, Romantic Stay

If Bellagio feels lively, Varenna feels peaceful.
This picturesque village is one of my favorite places on the lake thanks to its slower pace, colorful waterfront, and beautiful walking paths.
It’s ideal if your version of a perfect vacation includes lingering over dinner, strolling along the waterfront in the evening, and waking up to quiet lake views.
Varenna also has a train station, making it one of the easiest towns to reach from Milan.
My Hotel Pick
Set directly on the waterfront, this historic hotel offers classic Italian charm, lake-view rooms, beautiful gardens, and an excellent location for exploring the village.
Menaggio: Best for Relaxed Luxury

Located on the western shore, Menaggio often feels slightly less crowded than Bellagio while still offering excellent ferry connections and stunning scenery.
Its wide lakeside promenade, relaxed atmosphere, and excellent restaurants make it particularly appealing for couples and travelers who prefer quieter evenings.
My Hotel Pick
Grand Hotel Victoria Concept & Spa
One of the finest luxury hotels on Lake Como, featuring beautifully renovated rooms, an exceptional spa, multiple pools, and breathtaking lake views.
Como: Best for Short Trips & Easy Transportation

If you’re arriving by train from Milan or only have one or two nights, Como is often the most practical place to stay.
The city offers excellent transportation, beautiful waterfront promenades, fantastic shopping, and regular ferry service to the rest of the lake.
While it feels more like a small city than a lakeside village, it’s an excellent base if convenience is your priority.
My Hotel Picks
An intimate five-star boutique hotel overlooking the lake with exceptional service and elegant contemporary interiors.
Known for its rooftop pool, spacious rooms, and modern amenities, this is a great option for travelers looking for comfort with easy access to the lakefront.
Which Town Is Right for You?
| If you want… | Stay in… |
|---|---|
| Your first Lake Como trip | Bellagio |
| Romance and quiet charm | Varenna |
| Luxury with fewer crowds | Menaggio |
| Easy train access from Milan | Como |
My Recommendation
For most first-time visitors, I’d recommend splitting your stay between Bellagio and Varenna if your itinerary allows.
You’ll experience two very different sides of Lake Como—Bellagio’s lively energy and Varenna’s peaceful charm—while keeping ferry rides short and sightseeing easy.
If you’re limited on time, choose the town that best matches your travel style rather than trying to see everything. Lake Como is one of those destinations that’s best enjoyed slowly.
