What to Pack for a European Autumn Vacation (and What to Leave Behind)

The European Autumn Weather Trap
Here is what most people get wrong about fall in Europe: they think it is “sweater weather.” It is not. It is sometimes “four-seasons-in-one-day” weather.
You will wake up to 42°F fog in the Scottish Highlands, hit 65°F sunshine by lunch in Tuscany, and get caught in a rainstorm at 4 PM in Bavaria. If you pack a heavy winter coat, you will be sweating by noon. If you pack only light layers, you will be shivering at dawn.
The answer is not more clothes. The answer is smarter layers.
This is the autumn packing list I give every Styled Getaways client heading to Europe in September, October, or November. It fits in a carry-on. It handles rain. And it looks good in photos.
The Autumn Layering System
Instead of packing bulky items, pack a system of thin layers that you can add or remove throughout the day.
Base Layer: The Foundation
- 2 merino wool long-sleeve tees (black, cream, or heather grey)
- 1 lightweight merino turtleneck (for dressier dinners)
Merino wool is the autumn travel secret weapon. It regulates temperature (warm when it is cold, cool when it is warm), resists odor (you can wear it 3-4 times), and dries overnight after a sink wash.

Mid Layer: The Insulation
- 1 lightweight down vest or packable puffer (wear this under your rain jacket)
- 1 cashmere or merino cardigan (soft, thin, and instantly elevates any outfit)
The key is thin. A bulky fleece takes up half your bag. A lightweight down vest compresses to the size of a grapefruit.

Outer Layer: The Defense
- 1 waterproof rain jacket with a hood (not water-resistant—waterproof)
European autumn rain is not a drizzle. It is a commitment. A hood is non-negotiable because umbrellas are useless in wind and cobblestones.

Bottoms: The Mix-and-Match
- 1 pair of dark jeans (versatile, warm, and hide dirt)
- 1 pair of travel trousers or ponte pants (dressier than jeans, stretchy, and dry faster)
- 1 midi skirt or dress with tights (for dinners, churches, or days when you want to feel like you tried)
The Tights Secret
Pack 2-3 pairs of merino wool tights. They are warmer than cotton, more comfortable than synthetic, and they let you wear skirts and dresses well into November. Plus, they take up almost no room.

The Shoe Strategy: Wet Cobblestones Are Real
European autumn is not the season for suede. Or canvas. Or anything that will be ruined by a surprise downpour.
The Winner: Waterproof Leather Ankle Boots
You need one pair of ankle boots that can handle rain, cobblestones, and a 3-hour walking tour. Look for:
- Rubber or lug soles (traction on wet stone)
- Waterproof leather or treated suede
- Comfortable insoles
- A sleek enough silhouette that they work with jeans, trousers, and a skirt

The Backup: Waterproof Sneakers
One pair of waterproof or water-resistant sneakers for active days, hikes, or travel days. Do not bring running shoes that look like gym shoes. Bring something that looks intentional.

What to Leave Behind: Rain Boots
Bulky, heavy, and unnecessary. A good waterproof jacket and ankle boots handle 99% of European autumn rain.
The Accessories That Matter
1. A Wide-Brimmed, Packable Felt Hat
Not just for style. A wide-brimmed hat keeps rain off your face, shields your eyes from low autumn sun, and hides your hair on day seven when dry shampoo is not cutting it anymore.
2. A Large, Lightweight Scarf
A scarf is the most versatile item in your autumn bag. It is a blanket on the plane, a shawl in a chilly restaurant, a head covering for churches, and an accessory that makes the same black merino tee look different every day.
3. Leather Gloves
Not bulky ski gloves. Thin leather gloves that keep your hands warm during morning walks and look polished. You will wear them more than you think.

4. A Crossbody Bag with a Zipper
European autumn means bulky jackets, which means you cannot feel a pickpocket brush your back pocket. A crossbody bag that sits in front of you, with a zipper closure, is the safest option.

The Rain Gear That Actually Works
Packable Rain Pants
If you are heading to Scotland, Ireland, or the Alps in late autumn, and plan to be outdoors A LOT, pack one pair of packable rain pants. They go over your jeans or trousers and keep you dry during hikes or downpours. They weigh almost nothing and compress to the size of a granola bar.

A Travel Umbrella
Yes, bring one. But make it a compact, wind-resistant umbrella with a fiberglass frame. Cheap umbrellas flip inside out in European wind.

Waterproofing Spray for Your Boots
Even “waterproof” boots need a refresh after months in your closet. Spray them before you leave. Make sure to patch test.

The “Leave It Home” List
- Heavy winter coats. Bulky, unnecessary, and too warm for daytime. Layer instead.
- Suede boots or shoes. European autumn rain will destroy them.
- Multiple purses. You need one crossbody bag that works with everything.
- Cotton sweaters. They absorb moisture, take forever to dry, and can smell after one wear.
- High heels. Unless, you’re going to a fancy event or lots of fancy dinners – European cobblestones and autumn rain are not forgiving.
- Too many “just in case” items. You will wear 60% of what you pack. Be ruthless.
At Styled Getaways, I send every fall client a customized packing checklist based on their specific itinerary. Heading to the Scottish Highlands in October and doing lots of hiking? You need the rain pants. Heading to Tuscany in September? You can skip them and pack lighter layers.
I also book the hotels that have laundry facilities (or laundry service), can find the restaurants with fireplaces, and offer Plan B indoor experiences for the days when the weather turns. Because autumn travel is beautiful, but only if you are prepared for it.
