The Best Day Bags for Europe Travel (What I Actually Use in Every City)

By Megan

There are a lot of travel essentials people swear by, but if I had to choose one item that impacts my trip every single day, it would be my day bag.

When you’re spending hours walking through Paris, hopping on a train in Italy, exploring side streets in Vienna, or navigating a busy airport, the right bag can make your day feel effortless. The wrong one? You’ll notice it by lunchtime.

Over the years, I’ve become surprisingly picky about what makes a great travel bag. It needs to be comfortable, secure, versatile, and stylish enough that I don’t feel like I’m carrying hiking gear through some of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Here’s what I actually look for, and the types of bags I reach for again and again when traveling in Europe.

The Crossbody Bag That Goes Everywhere

If I’m choosing just one bag for a Europe trip, it’s almost always a crossbody.

A good crossbody keeps your hands free, stays close to your body in crowded areas, and works equally well whether you’re wandering a museum, sitting at a café, or navigating public transportation.

The sweet spot is something large enough for:

  • Phone
  • Wallet
  • Passport
  • Sunglasses
  • Portable charger
  • Lip balm
  • A few small essentials

But small enough that it doesn’t become heavy after a full day of sightseeing.

I generally gravitate toward black, red, or neutral colors that pair with everything and avoid overly trendy styles that might feel dated in travel photos later.

The Lightweight Tote I Always Pack

Even when I carry a crossbody during the day, I almost always pack a foldable tote.

It’s one of those items that doesn’t seem important until you need it.

A tote comes in handy for:

  • Farmers markets
  • Picnic supplies
  • Unexpected shopping
  • Train snacks
  • Carrying an extra layer on cooler days

I prefer one that folds into almost nothing inside my suitcase but feels sturdy enough to carry comfortably when needed.

When a Small Backpack Makes Sense

I know backpacks can be controversial in European cities.

For me, they’re not usually my first choice for daily sightseeing, but there are times when they’re incredibly useful.

A small, streamlined backpack works well for:

  • Travel days
  • Longer excursions
  • Day trips
  • Photography-heavy outings
  • Carrying a water bottle and extra layers

The key is choosing one that feels sleek rather than bulky. Europe often involves narrow streets, crowded transit, and small cafés where oversized bags can quickly become cumbersome.

Often, I opt for a Longchamp Le Pliage tote (M or L) instead of a backpack though.

Features I Never Compromise On

After enough trips, I’ve learned there are a few things that matter far more than brand names.

Comfortable Strap

You may carry your bag for ten or twelve hours some days.

A strap that digs into your shoulder can become surprisingly miserable by the end of a trip.

Secure Closures

I look for:

  • Zippers
  • Interior compartments
  • Hidden pockets

Not because I travel fearfully, but because it’s easier to relax when everything feels secure.

Lightweight Construction

A heavy bag before you’ve even added your belongings is usually a bad sign.

The lighter the bag starts, the better you’ll feel after miles of walking.

Neutral Style

I want one bag that works whether I’m:

  • Exploring museums
  • Visiting a cathedral
  • Having dinner
  • Walking through a market

The fewer bags I need to pack, the better.

What I Keep in My Day Bag

My daily essentials are surprisingly simple:

  • Phone
  • Portable charger
  • Wallet
  • Passport or passport copy
  • Sunglasses
  • Lip balm
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Small pack of tissues
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Hand lotion
  • Sometimes a light layer depending on the season
  • Earbuds

That’s usually enough to keep me comfortable without weighing myself down.

My Philosophy on Travel Bags

The best travel bag is the one you stop thinking about.

It doesn’t slide off your shoulder. It doesn’t feel too heavy. You’re not constantly digging through it trying to find something.

Instead, it quietly supports your day while you focus on what you actually came for: the destination.

When I look back on my favorite travel memories, I rarely remember what bag I carried. But I do remember how it felt to wander through a city comfortably, without being weighed down by things I didn’t need.

And that’s exactly what a great travel bag should do.
