Trouville, Deauville & Honfleur: A Quiet Coastal Reset in Northern France

After the residency ended, I headed north for a change of scenery, and some quiet, restful time by the sea.

Trouville and Deauville were exactly what I needed. I walked along the beach in Trouville‑sur‑Mer, wandered the shops in Deauville, and enjoyed long, unhurried time in cafes to write and reflect. One restaurant’s dog adopted me after I dropped a French fry, which felt like a very Northern French welcome.

I took a day trip to Honfleur by bus: an easy, scenic one‑hour ride. Tickets can be purchased at the machine inside the train station or from the nearby tourist information office, which is also full of helpful advice.

Honfleur surprised me. I hadn’t realized how many art galleries lined the harbor, and I spent hours wandering without a plan. When it came time to return, I learned a small but important lesson: make sure you’re waiting on the correct side of the road for the bus back because the stop isn’t well marked…
